How to Read a Supplement Label in India
A practical checklist for checking serving sizes, ingredients, nutrition information, directions and product details before you purchase.
Supplement packaging can make a product look straightforward, but the details on the label are what help you compare options. Take a minute to read beyond the front-of-pack claims before making a decision.
1. Check what the product actually is
Start with the product name, intended use and ingredient list. A familiar name on the front does not tell you everything about the formula. If the label is unclear about what is included or how the product is intended to be used, seek clarification from the manufacturer or choose an option with clearer information.
2. Compare serving size with the nutrition panel
Look for the stated serving size and how many servings are in the pack. Nutrition figures may be shown per serving, per 100 grams or in another format. Check the basis before comparing two products; otherwise, numbers can be misleading. Read exact quantities and units, and do not assume a bigger number is always better or that a daily value reflects your personal needs.
3. Read the complete ingredient list
Review ingredients, including flavours, sweeteners and other components. Check allergens and statements about cross-contact if you need to avoid a specific ingredient. Proprietary blends or unfamiliar terms can make comparison harder, so look for enough detail to understand what you are buying.
4. Review directions and cautions
Read the recommended use, serving directions, storage instructions and warnings. Avoid taking more than the labelled amount on the assumption that it will work faster. Keep products stored as directed and out of reach of children where appropriate.
5. Check traceability and seller information
Look for the manufacturer or marketer’s name and contact details, batch or lot information, expiry or best-before date, and applicable regulatory or licence details for the product category. For food and health supplements in India, check relevant FSSAI information where applicable. You can confirm details using appropriate official resources if unsure; a printed number alone should not be treated as proof of every quality claim.
Buy from a seller that provides clear product information, a genuine invoice or order record, and a way to contact support. Be wary of damaged seals, missing details, suspiciously extreme claims or packaging that appears altered.
6. Be sceptical of dramatic promises
Statements such as “instant results”, “works for everyone” or guaranteed changes deserve caution. Testimonials and influencer recommendations cannot establish that a product is suitable for you. Check claims against reliable information and consider what evidence is offered.
7. Consider your own circumstances
Supplements can interact with medicines or be unsuitable for some medical conditions, and more is not always better. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, buying for a child, managing a health condition or taking regular medication, speak with a qualified healthcare professional before use.
Keep a quick pre-purchase checklist
- Product purpose, serving size and full ingredients are clear.
- Nutrition quantities and units are easy to compare.
- Allergens, directions, warnings and storage are suitable for you.
- Manufacturer details, batch information and expiry date are present.
- Claims are realistic, and the seller is transparent and reachable.
A few minutes with the label can help you ask better questions and compare products more fairly. When important details are missing or unclear, it is reasonable to pause and choose a more transparent option.
